Nilgiri Langur

The Nilgiri langur, native to the Western Ghats of southern India, is a striking primate with glossy black fur and a golden-brown mane. These langurs are highly social, living in troops of 10 to 20 individuals. They inhabit dense forests and are most active during the day, feeding on leaves, fruits, and flowers.

Known for their loud calls, Nilgiri langurs use vocalizations to communicate and warn each other of danger. They are arboreal, spending much of their time in the treetops. Unfortunately, habitat loss and hunting for their fur and supposed medicinal properties have significantly reduced their numbers. Conservation projects in protected areas are critical for their survival.
