Snow Leopard (Panthera uncia)
The snow leopard, often called the "ghost of the mountains," is a majestic and elusive predator inhabiting the rugged, high-altitude regions of Central and South Asia. With a thick, pale gray coat patterned with rosettes and spots, it is perfectly adapted to blend into its rocky surroundings. Snow leopards have long tails, which help with balance on steep terrain and serve as insulation when curled around their bodies in freezing conditions.
These solitary hunters primarily prey on mountain sheep and goats, such as the bharal and ibex, but they are opportunistic and may also hunt smaller mammals and birds. Snow leopards are listed as vulnerable, with habitat loss, poaching, and climate change posing significant threats. Conservation programs focus on habitat protection and reducing human-wildlife conflict.
